2019
During this project I made 3 lamps based on different neighbourhoods of the city of Rotterdam. All the lamps are hand made out of electric wire, witch are recycled.
Recycling is important for me, because I think there are a lot of beautiful materials witch are not used anymore and go to waist.
I experimented a lot with the electric wire and at the end I decided to knit, engrave and melt it to make the final lamps out of it.
Pezen Hal
Pezen means working in the Rotterdam way of talking.
Hal stands for Holland America Lijn, which left there.
The lamp Pezen Hal is based on the neighbourhood Kop van Zuid. Previously this neighbourhood was a place with a lot of import and export. The pattern that I made with the different colours form the shape of a map. This represents the route that the boat made. Now this neighbourhood is a place with a lot of skyscrapers, offices and hotels. The small rounds are all connected, these repent the small rooms that are in the skyscrapers.
Befgajes Maas
Befgajes is another word for someone with judiciary power in the Rotterdam way of talking.
Maas is the name of the channel were the harbour is.
The lamp Befgajes Maas is based on the neighbourhood Nieuwe werk. Back in the days this neighbourhood was a rich harbour. The knitted plastic wires represent the old robes witch typically have the colours orange and brown. Now this neighbourhood is a place with a lot of lawyers. There are lots of old buildings because this area was not bombed during the war. The copper wire expresses this chique and classic style.
Sara Termeijer
Sara is the most popular gils name in Rotterdam.
Termeijer means prostitude in the Rotterdam way of talking.
The lamp Sara Termeijer is based on the neighbourhood Katendrecht. This neighbourhood used to be a place with lots of prostitutes. All the sea met went here to go out, it was an unsafe place to be. The black rubber wire, the red light and the print on the rubber expresses this wild night life. Now it is one of the safest neighbourhoods of Rotterdam, where a lot of families with kids live. The copper wire witch is oxidised, expresses this safety. The wire is kitted and that is also very playful.
